Run for the Records is back for 2012

ANCHORAGE - Registration is underway for the 2012 Mayor’s Marathon and Half-Marathon presented by ConocoPhillips, set for June 23rd in Anchorage. Similar to the 2011 event, cash prizes will be given for any men’s or women’s course records broken in both the marathon and half-marathon events.

A course record for the women’s (2:38:19)and/or men’s marathon (2:22:29) in 2012 will earn the individual a $5,000 cash award while a course record for the women (1:18:41) and/or men’s half-marathon (1:07:47) will earn the individual a $1,000 cash award. As has been the case in recent years, the top Alaskan men’s and women’s finishers in the 2012 marathon will each receive roundtrip tickets for two courtesy of Alaska Airlines.

All finishers in all events will receive an event specific technical finisher shirt, and a high quality finisher medal.

The Mayor’s marathon event (26.2 miles) and half-marathon event (13.1 miles) are certified by the U.S. Track and Field Association. Two other individual events are offered - five-miler (5.6 miles) and 1.6-mile Youth Cup. Also, back is the popular marathon relay, featuring four-member teams running 6.5-mile legs along the marathon course.

Marathon going greener in 2012

ANCHORAGE (December 20, 2011) - For over three and a half decades, the Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon has promoted healthy bodies, and now the race is doing its part to promote a healthy planet as well.

In conjunction with the University of Alaska Anchorage’s sustainability efforts, race organizers on Thursday announced the continuation of several changes that cuts waste and helps the event be more earth-friendly. This year’s Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon, presented by ConocoPhillips, is set for Saturday, June 23rd.

“After administering events such as this for 24 years, you understand that while they are all for a good cause, there is no doubt they have an impact on our environment,” said race director Michael Friess. “With the emerging alternatives in terms of sustainable products and online communication, it only makes sense to implement these kinds of changes immediately.”

Friess said the biggest changes last year was the conversion to bio-degradable cups – 84,000 of them – and trash bags, along with the elimination of printed materials in favor of online info and registration.

Some of the other efforts include:
• the elimination of balloons, which will be replaced by re-usable decorations
• recycling containers at aid stations and the finish line
• event posters printed on 100 percent recycled paper
• encouraging the public, with the help of the Municipality of Anchorage and People Mover, to make use of free bus service to and from race sites

“Our assistant race director, Mandy Kaempf, really took on this project and moved it forward, along with the help of the sustainability office and the folks at Green Alaska Solutions,” Friess added. “Because of the hard work of a few people, the racing experience for our thousands of participants will be positively enhanced, while minimizing the impact on Alaska.”

Race registration is ongoing at MayorsMarathon.com, while bib pick-up is scheduled for the expo June 21-22.
